HOUSE CLEANING LUZ

The water here comes off the Salt and the Verde and it is hard. You see it first as a white haze on the glass, then on the little screen in the faucet, then in the grout lines where the mop water dried and left its minerals behind. Leave it long enough and it stops wiping off, because it has etched in. So on a deep clean we give the glass and the fixtures real time, and we work the grout lines instead of only the face of the tile.

Then there is the dust. The storms come through in July and August and the fine stuff does not stay outside. It gets in through the window seals and under the doors, and it does not announce itself. It shows up a week later on top of the ceiling fan blades, on the return vent, along the top edge of the door frames, in the track of the slider out to the patio. In July the afternoons run past a hundred and ten, so the windows stay shut and the air runs all day, which is exactly why those places collect what they collect. We check them on our own. Nobody has to ask.

Same with the sun-facing windows, the ledge above the front door, and the tops of the kitchen cabinets, where grease and dust turn into something a wipe will not move. Everything we use is eco-friendly, biodegradable and hypoallergenic, so what leaves the house is the dirt and not a smell that stays until Thursday.

The house that sat closed all summer

A lot of houses around here go quiet in May and wake up in November.

Sun City, Peoria, Fountain Hills. Somebody flies back in after months away and the place has been shut the whole time: dust on every flat surface, fans furred with it, a refrigerator to wipe out, a patio slider you could write your name on. That call usually comes a week before they land, and often from a son or a daughter who is not even in Arizona. We open it up, do the whole thing, and it is done before anyone walks in.

February and March are the other season. Scottsdale, Mesa and Tempe fill up while the ballparks are going, and the rentals turn over fast — one group out in the morning, another in that afternoon. We do turnovers Monday through Friday. If your guest checks out on a Saturday, we are not the ones who can get in that day, and it is better you hear that now than the night before.

And then the ordinary reasons. Someone is coming Friday and the guest room has been a storage room since March. The kitchen got away from you — the stove, the inside of the microwave, the cabinet fronts — and you would rather somebody just did the kitchen and nothing else. An apartment is empty and it needs a deep clean before the keys go back. Any of those is a normal call. One time, no schedule attached, no talking you into more.

From Sun City to Rio Verde

We work Phoenix and the towns around it: Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, Glendale, Peoria, Gilbert, Sun City, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek and Rio Verde.

That is a wide piece of the Valley and the two ends of it are nothing alike. Out past Fountain Hills toward Rio Verde, and up in Cave Creek, the desert starts right at the door — dirt roads, gravel yards, and everything that comes in on shoes and on paws stops in the entry until somebody deals with it. Down in Tempe and Gilbert it is more apartments and offices, and less of that.

An hour of driving is about where we stop. If you are inside that hour we can come once and see how it goes, or set it every week, every two weeks or once a month. The far towns work out better for everyone as a regular day than as a one-off squeezed between two other houses. That is not a rule, it is just what tends to work.

Offices are the same map. If yours empties out at five, we are still working until seven, and that is usually the easiest way to do it — nobody stepping around a wet floor, nobody waiting on us to finish.

Who answers, and who opens the door

Write to us in English or in Spanish, whichever one you were already thinking in. The answer is the same either way.

It matters more than it sounds, because the person who books is often not the person who is home. A daughter in another state books for her mother in Sun City. A property manager in Tempe sends a gate code and a checkout time and never meets us. A husband texts and a mother-in-law opens the door. Tell us who is going to be there and what they would rather speak, and that is what they get.

It also means you can ask for what you actually want instead of hoping it gets done. Do the oven this time. Skip the office, it is a mess but it is my mess. The dog stays in the back room and hates the vacuum. Do not move anything on my nightstand. Small things, all of them, and they are the whole difference between a house that got cleaned and a house that got cleaned the way you like it.
