A good part of my week is short-term rentals, and that job has a clock on it. Checkout is at eleven, the next people get their code at three, and everything in between belongs to me: beds stripped, laundry running, kitchen wiped down, bathroom put back the way it looks in the photos. I've done enough of them to know what a guest notices walking in, and it is never the floor. It's the shower door and the inside of the microwave.

The other half of those calls is the Wednesday phone call. Your sister-in-law flies in Friday and the guest room has been on your list since spring. Or it's the morning after a birthday, when forty people were in and out of the back door on a ninety-five-degree August night and the AC spent the whole evening losing. You don't need a standing arrangement for any of that. A one-time clean is a normal thing to ask me for, and I treat it like any other job on the calendar.

Fifteen years, and I start at the ceiling

Here the AC runs most of the year, and that puts the dirt somewhere people never think to look.

Ceiling fan blades. The return-air grille in the hallway. The edge of every supply vent, where a gray line builds up so slowly that nobody in the house ever catches it starting. I work top to bottom, always, because whatever I knock loose has to land somewhere and I'd rather it land on a floor I haven't done yet. Fifteen years and I have never changed that order.

The rest of what I check first is just Houston being Houston. The sliding door track, where mud from a hard rain packs in and dries like cement. The grout line in the shower, which grays faster in this city than anywhere else I've cleaned, because a bathroom here never fully dries — August mornings sit up around ninety percent humidity and a closed-up house holds every bit of it. And in late February and March, that yellow-green film off the oaks and the pines that everybody calls dust. It rides in on shoes, it settles on top of the door frames, and that's where you find it in May.

It's also why I use what I use: plant-based, biodegradable, easy on the nose. Put a strong cleaner in a Houston house in August and it has nowhere to go. Every window is shut and the AC just carries it room to room until bedtime. Dogs and cats are welcome around me. They're usually the first ones to come see what I'm doing.

The week the builder hands over the keys

Out past Tomball, up around Magnolia, over in Cypress, they are still putting up whole streets at a time. Those are mine too.

Construction cleaning isn't one job, it's three, and I take all three. The rough pass while the trades are still coming and going, so the next crew isn't working inside a pile. The final, before the walk-through: sticker glue off the windows and the appliances, grout haze off the tile, paint flecks off everything, the fine white dust out of the corners it drifted into. Then the touch-up after the punch list, because the day somebody comes back to fix a door, they leave a little more sawdust on the way out.

Drywall dust is its own animal. It doesn't sweep, it travels. You can clear a room, come back the next morning, and there's a fresh coat on the sills, because half of it was still hanging in the air while you worked. That is exactly why the final pass gets its own day instead of being the last hour of the first one.

Move-outs are the same idea from the other end. An empty house tells on itself — the clean rectangle where the couch sat, the inside of cabinets nobody opened in four years, the fridge with the door propped open. Easier before the furniture, not after. Leaving or arriving, same job.

When you call, you get me

You call, I answer. English or Spanish, whichever one you open with, and I'll follow you from there.

This is a family business and I'm usually the one who shows up. That matters more than it sounds like it should: the person who gave you the price is the same person standing in your kitchen with the bucket. Nothing gets repeated twice, nothing gets lost between the phone call and the front step, and there's nobody in the middle deciding what you meant.

Monday through Saturday, eight in the morning to six in the evening. Sunday is my one day off. Cash or Zelle. It starts at $130 a visit, and where it lands depends on the size of the place and how deep you want me to go — you get that number before I start, not after. One time, every week, every two weeks, once a month, whatever actually fits your house. And if something isn't right when I'm finished, tell me and I'll make it right.

Fifty-five miles from Conroe to Katy

That is the whole width of my map, and it's about an hour of driving on the Grand Parkway.

Up north it's Conroe, Magnolia, The Woodlands and Tomball. East of those, Spring and Humble. Cypress sits in the middle. Then it runs west all the way out to Katy. It's an arc across the top and the west side of Houston, and I'll drive up to an hour to reach any point on it, which is why a Katy job and a Conroe job can both be a normal Tuesday for me.

I'd rather be straight about the other side of that line. If you're south in Pearland, east toward Baytown, or down near the water in League City, you're outside my hour. You'd get better service from somebody who lives near you than from me sitting in traffic for half the morning. Ask me anyway, because sometimes it lines up with the rest of the day — but I'm not going to say yes in September and then be the person who runs late all year.
