Anybody who moves to the Upstate learns about the clay in the first week. It does not behave like dust. Wet it and it spreads, and it works into grout lines, into the edge of the baseboard, into the light carpet by the front door. A dry vacuum lifts the top of it and leaves the color behind.

It arrives on shoes and on the dog, and it arrives worst after rain. Greenville gets close to fifty inches in a normal year, and a lot of that shows up as a thunderstorm on a June afternoon that leaves the yard soft for two days.

Then spring. By March, most years, the loblolly pines let go and everything outdoors turns yellow: the cars, the porch rail, the mailbox lid. The humidity here makes that pollen stick instead of blow off, and it comes through the window screens and settles on the sills and along the top edge of the blinds. By April the oaks and the hickories have joined in and April is the heavy month.

By July the house is shut up with the air running most of the day and highs sitting right around ninety, so whatever came in during the spring is still circulating in there. That is usually when the phone rings and somebody says they cannot understand why the house feels dusty two days after they cleaned it.

Fifteen years of watching this, so we plan around it. Late winter and early spring we go after screens, sills, blinds and entry floors first. Carpets and upholstery we would rather do in the fall, once the air finally dries out.

The patio counts too

Most people call a cleaner for a house. We do houses, apartments and Airbnbs, and then there is a whole list of work almost nobody thinks to ask us about.

Patios and grills. Around here a porch is a room you actually use from March through October, and by August a grill is carrying a full season of grease and pollen. We clean them.

Pressure washing, because clay does not rinse off concrete. It settles into the pores of a driveway and sets, and the shaded side of a house in this humidity goes green on its own schedule.

Post-construction. There are new houses going up all through Greer, Simpsonville, Duncan and Fountain Inn, and the dust inside a new build is the same clay that is sitting on the lot outside. It is on top of the fan blades, in the window channels, in the door tracks, on the pantry shelves. We do the final clean so the place is ready to live in.

Carpets and upholstery, the couch the dog has claimed included. Move-ins and move-outs, which is a different animal from a cleaning and people tend to discover that at the end of a lease.

And the commercial side: offices, stores, dealerships and churches. A showroom is glass, a lot of open floor and a customer bathroom that gets used all day long. It is not a house and it does not get cleaned like one. We bring our own equipment and supplies to every one of these.

Saturday is a real day for us

Monday through Saturday, eight in the morning to six in the evening. Saturday is not an emergency slot we squeeze you into. It is on the schedule like any other day.

Eight o'clock is for the person who pulls out of the driveway at seven thirty. You leave for work, we come in behind you, and most of the time we are gone before the bus comes back down the street.

Six in the evening is for the other side of it. An office, a store, a showroom: we come in once the doors close, and nobody has to work around a mop.

And Saturday is for people who would rather be home while we are there. A lot of our clients stay. They sit on the porch with coffee, or they run down to the market on Main Street, which is open eight to noon from May through October, and they come back with the tomatoes to a finished house.

Six days a week also matters if you rent your place out. A Saturday checkout at eleven and a check-in at four is a turn we can make, and it does not push anyone else's Monday, because there are six of us.

We drive up to fifty miles, about an hour. That takes in Greer and Taylors, Simpsonville, Mauldin, Fountain Inn and Duncan going south, and Easley, Pickens and Cleveland heading toward the mountains.

Nothing here is a contract

The thing we hear most is some version of this: my house is not bad enough to need somebody, or I could never do that every week.

Then do not do it every week. We work one-time, weekly and monthly, and monthly is where most people should probably start.

Once a month is not a tidy-up. It is the baseboards, the tub and the shower door, the window tracks, the fan blades, the tops of the doors, the ceiling corners. The whole list of things that have never once gotten done on a Tuesday night after work. Whatever you do yourself in between then sits on top of that instead of fighting it.

One-time is a real option too, and it needs no explanation: family coming in for Thanksgiving, a party you are hosting, a rental you just got the keys back on.
