From October to June the rain never really stops here. Inside, though, what marks a house is not the rain itself — it is the gap between a warm room and a cold pane of glass. Water gathers along the bottom of the window, settles into the corner of the frame, and if it sits long enough that corner goes dark. Wiped in November it is a two-minute job. Left until March it is a project.

The older houses have basements, and Ballard sits low enough that its basements know it. Same in the older parts of Queen Anne and West Seattle: a bungalow with a full basement underneath, the laundry down there, boxes stacked against a wall that has never been completely dry. That is where we spend real minutes — moving what is sitting on the floor, wiping the base of the walls, giving the laundry corner some air instead of treating it as storage.

Then the first three feet inside the front door, which do more work than the rest of the floor combined. Wet sidewalk, wet shoes, grit, cedar needles, the black film the streets carry all winter. On a Queen Anne hill you climb to your own door and every bit of it comes up with you. That strip gets done first, every visit.

Nine to five, both sides of the lake

Monday through Friday, nine to five. That is the whole schedule, and it is worth knowing before you call rather than after.

It fits some households exactly. If you leave at eight and get back at six, you are never home while we work — you walk into it finished, which is what most people actually want out of this.

Because we work days, offices and showrooms get cleaned during business hours instead of at midnight. Short-term rentals fit the same window: checkout at eleven, check-in at three, that is four hours, and four hours is plenty as long as nobody wastes the first one. We know that clock and we do not miss it.

We cover both sides of Lake Washington — West Seattle, Ballard, Queen Anne, Rainier, White Center, Shoreline, Tukwila and Des Moines on this side, Bellevue and Kirkland across the water, Bothell up at the north end — and we travel about an hour out. Crossing the lake at eleven in the morning and crossing it at four are two different afternoons, so the earlier you give us dates, the better the slot we can hold for you.

And if what you need is a Saturday, we are not your call. Better you hear that here than after two phone calls.

One clean first, then you decide

Most people putting this off are not comparing us to another cleaner. They are comparing us to doing it themselves, for free, on Sunday.

So here is the honest math. A house does not need somebody every week to feel different. Once a month is a real change. Between visits a house drifts — the bathroom loses its edge, the kitchen turns tacky in the corners nobody looks at, the floors go flat. A monthly clean resets the floor under all of it, and what you do in between becomes tidying instead of scrubbing. That is a different kind of weekend.

We do one-time, weekly, every two weeks and monthly. There is nothing to join. A lot of people start with a single cleaning just to see what the place looks like when it is genuinely finished, then decide from there. Plenty never move past monthly, and that is fine — monthly is not the practice version of weekly.

Yes, we clean car dealerships

Almost nobody puts this on a list, so we will: we clean dealerships.

A showroom is a glass box in a city where it rains most of the year, and glass tells on everyone. Door handles, the print of every hand that leaned on a hood, the streaks that dried on the inside of the window — under those lights you can read all of it from the doorway. Then there is the half no customer sees: the sales offices, the desks nobody clears, the break room, the restroom that everyone who walks in uses.

Offices are the same idea in a smaller building. Move-outs are their own animal — an empty place where the only things anyone judges are the inside of the oven, the track of the slider and the bottom shelf of the fridge. Nobody walks into an empty apartment and admires it. They open cabinets.

And what we clean with is your call. Eco-friendly, biodegradable or hypoallergenic products, or ordinary ones if that is what you like in your own house. If scent is an issue for somebody there, tell us when you write, not when we are at the door.

Alder in February, smoke in September

The two stretches that undo a clean house here have nothing to do with rain.

Late February and March the alders let go, and the birches carry it into May. It arrives as a fine yellowish dust on window sills, on dark furniture, on the top of the fridge, on the hood of the car in the driveway. It is not dirt, it is pollen, and it is back the next morning — which is why wiping it once in April feels like an afternoon wasted. That one belongs on a schedule, not on a burst of energy.

The other end of the year is August and September. Those are the dry months, and they are also when smoke from the fires east and north of us drifts over the city. Most houses here have no air conditioning, so at eighty-five degrees the windows are open, and then the light outside goes the color of weak tea. Every flat surface takes a thin gray film — the tops of picture frames, the fan blades, the screen, the white bathroom counter that looks clean until you drag a finger across it.

That is what a deep clean is really for around here. Not because a house is dirty, but because twice a year the air itself lands on every horizontal surface at once — high shelves, blinds, baseboards, the tops of the doors. The places you skip because you cannot see them, which is exactly why they collect.
