The Cascades split Washington into two different climates. West of the Cascades, in Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia, the rain runs from fall into spring: mud on entryways, damp bathrooms, moss and mildew that keep coming back, and plenty of homes where shoes come off at the door. East of the mountains, around Spokane, the Tri-Cities, and the Yakima Valley, it turns dry and dusty, with cold winters and hot summers. Late summer smoke from wildfires settles across both sides some years.
On the west side the work leans toward moisture: bathrooms, window tracks, and entryways that are wet more days than not from fall to spring. In a shoes-off house, floors get handled differently.
