That is the call we get most. Somebody who is not lazy and not broke, just out of hours. The house is nice. The house is also not clean, and it has not been for a while, and they have run out of weekends to fix it.

A lot of them run their own thing, a shop or a truck or a couple of employees. Up at five, home at seven, and the last thing left in them is a bathroom floor. We also clean for families where the gear never quite gets put away: skis in April, bikes in May, the camp chairs that live in the hallway all summer. Nobody is failing at anything. There is just no gap in the week where cleaning fits.

Then there are people who have been in the same house forty years and are finished getting down in the tub. They can still do the counters. It is the low work and the high work that stops first. And the ones who work from home, which sounds like it should help and does the opposite. You are in the house all day, you see every crumb, and you still finish at six with nothing left.

In December it is dark here before you close the laptop. You come out of the back bedroom you turned into an office, switch on a light, and the whole place looks worse than it did at noon. That is usually the week somebody writes to us.

Not every job of ours is a house

Not everything we clean is a house. Offices, apartments, dealerships, and places people rent out by the night.

Dealership work is its own animal. Glass at every height, all day, and a floor that shows one shoe print from the front door to the sales desk. Anybody who has driven the Havana strip in Aurora knows the cars are only half of what is being judged from the sidewalk. We fit that work in around their hours, inside ours: Monday through Saturday, eight to five.

Short-term rentals are a clock more than a job. Somebody flies out, somebody flies in, and in between the sheets change and the bathroom gets put back to zero. Out toward the airport in Green Valley Ranch, and around Aurora, that turn lands on whatever day it lands on. It is one of the reasons we work Saturdays.

Move-outs are the ones people underestimate. The apartment looks fine with your furniture in it. Take the couch out and there is the wall behind it. Same story with an office when the lease ends. We do the empty ones and the lived-in ones.

Prices start at $110 a visit, and you are allowed to have us once and never again. Some offices we do every week. Some houses, once a month. Both are ordinary.

You do not have to hide the gear

The most common reason people do not call is that they think they have to clean before we get there.

You do not. There is nothing on your counter we have not already seen on somebody else's. The boots by the door, the mail pile, the dog bed that needs washing. Leave it. We would rather walk into the house the way it actually lives, because that is what tells us where the hours need to go.

The second reason is money, and that one is fair, because most places will not give you a number at all. Ours starts at $110 a visit. That is a real starting price and not a hook. What yours comes to depends on how big the place is and how long it has been since anybody did it properly. Ask and we will say it plainly. Cash or Zelle, no card machine, and nothing sitting there ready to charge you again next month unless you ask us to come back.

The third reason is people thinking that hiring a cleaner means every week from now on. It does not. Once is a thing people do. Once a month is a thing people do. The kitchen by itself is a thing people do, and if it were our house that is where we would start: the oven, behind the stove, the cabinet fronts nobody has wiped since spring.

And if English is not the language you would rather sort this out in, we speak Spanish too. It changes nothing about the price.

You choose which bottle we open

We carry two kinds of product, the eco-friendly ones and the regular ones, and which one comes out of the bag is your call.

It matters more here than people expect. From October into April the windows in this city stay shut and the furnace runs, so whatever gets cleaned with in the morning is still hanging around at dinner. A strong product in a sealed house a mile up makes for a long afternoon. If there is a baby crawling the floor, or somebody who gets a headache off smells, say so when you write and we bring the eco ones. No extra charge and no speech about it.

Pets have never been a problem. Dogs follow us room to room, which is fine. Cats hide, which is also fine. In winter the dogs are the reason the floors go gray so fast, coming in off the sidewalk with the grit and the de-icer on their paws and walking it straight down the hallway. That is not a dog problem. That is a February problem.

The dry air does the rest. There is not enough humidity out here to hold dust down, so it does not settle and stay put, it travels. Ceiling fans, the tops of the door frames, the slats of the blinds. In the older houses that still cool with a swamp cooler, the first warm week of June pushes a whole winter of it through every room at once. Up in Boulder, when the wind comes down off the foothills, what you dusted Tuesday is back Wednesday. And spring around here never commits: seventy degrees on a Thursday, snow on Friday, and both of them end up on your floor.

So we look up. Most people clean at eye level and below. And if allergies are the actual reason you are calling, tell us that first, and we will spend the time high and around the vents instead of making the counters shine.

Where we park, and what happens next

If nobody has ever cleaned your house but you, here is the whole thing, start to finish.

First, tell us where to put the car. In the older parts of the city that means the alley or a permit block. Out in Parker or Castle Rock it is just the driveway. It sounds like nothing. It is the one detail that makes a first visit start late.

Then you walk us through. Five minutes, not more. You point at the two or three things that bother you every single day, the shower door, the oven, the baseboards in the hallway, and we write them down, because that is what you are actually paying for. Everybody has their thing. Ours is the kitchen.

After that, stay or go. Plenty of people leave for work and text us the code. Plenty of people sit at the table on a call while we work around them. Neither one is strange and neither one changes what gets done.

We start with the kitchen and the bathrooms, because those are the two rooms that decide whether a house feels clean. Floors last, so nothing lands on them after.

At the end, walk it with us. Open the oven. Run a finger wherever you were going to run it anyway. If something is not right, say it out loud and it gets redone at no extra cost, right then, while we are still standing there. Then it is cash or Zelle, and we are gone.
