The trades are gone, the floors are down, the stickers are off the appliances. Then the afternoon sun comes around and hits the glass at an angle, and you see it: a haze on the windows, a gray line where the baseboard meets the floor, grit in the track of the slider. It has been there the whole time. The light just had not gotten to it yet.

What gets people is the calendar, not the dirt. Somebody set a closing date months ago, back when the framing was up, and every trade on that job has been running a week behind ever since. The cleaner is the last name on the list and the only one with nowhere to push to. So the call comes on a Thursday for a Friday, and that is the week the house has to be ready for somebody to walk through it and sign.

We would rather have the Thursday call than no call. But if you already know the date, say it out loud when you write, even if it is six weeks out. Dates that far ahead are the easy ones.

The weather down here keeps its own schedule

People who have not driven this corridor think it is all one place. Downtown gets a dusting, and out past Castle Pines there is a foot of snow on the ground.

There is a ridge that runs east and west across this end of the metro. Storms climb it and dump what they are carrying on the towns along the top, which is why the heaviest snow around here lands in March and April, not in January. Ask anybody who has lived through a spring in Castle Rock.

For us that means a job out that way gets its own day, and we talk about the drive before we talk about the price. A morning in Greenwood Village and an afternoon in Elizabeth is not the same as two houses in Littleton, and pretending otherwise is how somebody ends up waiting for a cleaner who is still forty minutes out.

Past the pavement

Elizabeth is ranch country. Acreage, horses, county gravel that comes right up to the door — and gravel does not stop at the mat, it rides in on boots and settles into whatever the entry is made of.

Here is the part that surprises people, and almost nobody thinks to ask about it: out there you are off the city water. Denver drinks snowmelt off the mountains. The towns down the corridor pull from the aquifer, and plenty of houses in Elbert County run on a private well. Well water carries a lot more mineral, and it shows up first on the things you look at every day — the shower glass, the faucet, the ring at the waterline in a toilet that nobody has been using.

Scrubbing harder does not take that off. It needs the right product and a longer pass, which is a different job from a standard clean, and it is worth saying so when you write instead of wondering why the glass still looks cloudy afterward.

The small ones count

Not everything down here is four bedrooms and a finished basement.

There are a lot of one-bedrooms and studios around Littleton and Greenwood Village, and the people in them talk themselves out of writing. They figure a cleaning company wants a big house, or that it is not worth anybody driving out for. A studio is a job. It is a short one, and short jobs fit in a day beside long ones.
