Highlands Ranch was built to a plan, and the plan put open space at the back of a great many houses. Dry prairie grass runs right up to the fence line, and it seeds through late summer into fall. Dogs go out into it and come back with the seed heads and burrs in their coats, and the wind that crosses that open ground carries the same dry grit onto patios and windows.
