You can usually see exactly where it stops. There is a pale line across the hall floor a few feet in, where the boots came off, and a gray crust along the baseboard on the door side. On old hardwood, and most of Brighton is old hardwood, the grit is the part that does the damage. It gets walked in, and then it gets walked on. A vacuum lifts the loose sand off a rug and leaves the rest sitting down in the pile where you cannot see it.

Then there is the heat. From November until the radiators finally go quiet, the windows stay shut and the same air keeps going around the same rooms. Dust ends up on the tops of the door frames, on the window trim, on the ceiling fan nobody has looked at since August. It is not that more dirt came in that winter. It is that none of it went out.

Spring is a different job. The oak and the maple start early around here, and by April and May there is a green-yellow film on the storm windows and the sills you could write your name in. Then comes the first week it gets above sixty, everybody opens the windows at once, and it all blows straight in and settles. By late summer the air is heavy and the bathroom and the kitchen hold on to it.

So we tend to tell people the same thing. One deep clean when the season turns, floors, trim, inside the windows, behind and underneath the things that never get moved. After that a regular visit is enough to hold it. A house in this part of Boston does not get dirty once. It gets dirty four times a year, and it happens on a schedule you can see coming.

Splitting it three ways on Comm Ave

Some of the apartments we clean off Commonwealth Avenue have three names on the lease, and the cleaning gets split three ways.

That is the part people leave out when they decide this is not for them. The picture in your head is somebody coming every single week, and that is not what most of this is. It can be once a month. It can be one single visit in October because your sister is coming for a weekend and nobody has touched the guest room since you moved in.

Once a month does more to a house than people expect, and there is a reason for it. When somebody cleans properly every four weeks, nothing gets the chance to build into a project. The shower door never reaches the point where it needs an hour by itself. The oven never reaches the point where you would rather not open it. You end up keeping a house instead of rescuing one, and those are two very different amounts of work.

And none of it runs on its own. There is no card sitting on file and nothing renewing in the background. When the visit is finished you hand over cash or a check, or you send a Zelle, and that is the end of it. If you want us back in four weeks, you tell us so.

From Brighton to Andover, six days a week

We start at eight in the morning and the last house of the day is finished by six, Monday through Saturday.

The eight o'clock is for the person who would rather not be there for it. You head out, we come in, and you walk back into it done. The middle of the day is the quiet stretch and that is when most houses get cleaned. Saturday is there because plenty of people would rather be in their own kitchen with a coffee while it happens, and nobody should have to burn a vacation day for that.

The other half of a schedule like this is the driving, and around Boston that is the half that decides everything. Brookline and the rest of the city are ten minutes. Waltham, Weston, Lexington, Concord and Bedford are a run out the Pike or Route 2. Billerica, Reading and Andover are further north and eat more of the morning, so those get an early slot rather than something squeezed into the afternoon.

We stop at about an hour out from Brighton, and that is on purpose. Somebody who shows up late, rushed and already thinking about traffic is not much use to the house they came to clean.

When the rooms are still empty

A lot of leases in this city turn over on the first of September, and for a few days the streets here are trucks, tape and mattresses out on the curb.

Move-out cleaning is its own animal and it has almost nothing in common with a regular visit. The place is empty, so everything the furniture was covering is suddenly in plain sight: the rectangle where the couch sat, the inside of every closet, the fridge, the oven, the tops of the kitchen cabinets. It goes faster because nothing is in the way, and it goes deeper because there is nowhere left to skip.

We do the other side of that date too. Move-in cleaning, before the truck arrives, while the floors and the closets are the only clean shot you are ever going to get at them.

Short-term rentals are the same work against a clock. Guests out in the morning, new ones arriving that afternoon, and in between the whole place has to be put back: beds stripped and remade, towels, bathroom, kitchen, floors, nothing of the last people left anywhere. If you rent out a place around Brighton or Brookline you already know the turnover is the business.

Two more things, and both of them are your call, not ours. We can work with eco-friendly products or with the regular ones, whichever you would rather have in your house.
