It is the kitchen. It is the room that quietly became wherever things go when there is nowhere else. People run the vacuum before we get there, which happens in Sunset Hills and happens in Thomasville, and it is a little like brushing your teeth on the way to the dentist. Leave it. What is on the floor is the job.

Around here, a good share of what people apologize for is not even mess. Piedmont red clay walks in on the soles of shoes and settles into grout and the edge of a light carpet like it is paying rent. Late March and into April, pine pollen sits on top of it, yellow on the windowsills and the porch rail and back the morning after you wipe it down. By July we are in the upper eighties and sticky, and a shower that never fully dries starts to show it. None of that says anything about you. It says you live in Guilford County.

The other thing that keeps people from writing is not knowing how they are supposed to act. Do you stay? Do you hover? Do you apologize the whole time? You do not have to be home at all, and plenty of people are at work when we come. If you are home, work, sleep, take the kids to Lindley Park. And if there is a room you would rather we skipped, say so and we skip it.

Write in English or in Spanish, whichever one comes out faster when you are tired. Both get read.

Between a dealership floor and a nursery

In one week we might do a sales floor out on Wendover, a two-bedroom apartment near campus, and a house in Summerfield with a den nobody has sat in since Christmas.

The commercial work taught us something about the houses. Somebody who spends all day making a showroom look effortless walks into his own kitchen at seven at night with nothing left. Same for the woman who runs the front office of a small company off Gate City Boulevard. They are not lazy. They are finished.

Families with young kids call for a different reason, and it is arithmetic, not mess. Saturday is one day long, there are two adults, and one of them is standing at a field in Jamestown until noon. A lot of them land on every two weeks. A house holds together for fourteen days. Thirty is a stretch.

Retired customers usually want something narrower and steadier. The tub, the floors, and the things that live up high where a step stool gets involved. Monthly suits that fine.

Then there is whoever works out of a spare bedroom and somehow has the least time of anyone in the house. And the short-term rental owners, who in this part of the state have April and October circled, because when the furniture market opens High Point fills up and rooms get rented from Jamestown to Kernersville.

Turnovers are their own animal. Checkout at eleven, check-in at four, and the sheets, the shower and the coffee maker all have to fit in between.

Three streets over, or out past Lexington

The first question is where you are, because the map decides more than people expect. Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, Burlington, Jamestown, Kernersville, Oak Ridge, Summerfield, Thomasville, Lexington. Up to about an hour out. It is easier to hand you a real time if we already have somebody near you that day.

The second question is what is in the house, and it is not to size up the house. It is to know what to bring. Asthma, allergies, a baby crawling on the floor, and we come with the hypoallergenic products. Otherwise most people want the regular ones, because they want the bathroom to smell like the bathroom got cleaned. You pick, and you can change your mind later.

We work Monday through Saturday, eight in the morning to five. Saturdays go first, so if that is the one you need, ask early in the week.

The day itself is less dramatic than people picture it. We start high in a room and work down, so nothing lands on what is already finished. Kitchen and bathrooms eat the most time and always will. Beds get made. Trash goes out. A first visit runs longer than the ones after it, because a house that has not had this done takes what it takes. From then on we are keeping up instead of catching up.
