Cleaning a home in Portales
Portales is a college town south of Clovis, built around Eastern New Mexico University, with peanut fields and dairies running out from the edge of town. The blocks near campus are small houses and apartments that fill with students in August and empty out in May, and the older streets are mostly single-story brick. The ground around town is sandy, and on a windy day that sand is on the move.
Near campus the calendar sets the work. Apartments turn over at the end of each semester, and a move-out there means the inside of every cabinet, the oven and the refrigerator, because that is what gets checked before a deposit comes back. In the family houses the sandy soil comes in on shoes and paws, so entries, rugs and the carpet along the baseboards take the most time.
