Garland is an older Dallas suburb of postwar ranch houses on wide lots, mature trees over the streets, and Lake Ray Hubbard along its east side. Winters are short, so the back door opens and closes all day and the dog goes in and out with it year round. Some of those yards have a pool; most have a slab patio, a chain-link fence and a shed with the mower in it.

Dog hair runs through the whole visit. It works into baseboards, carpet edges, sofa seams and the return vent, so some rooms get vacuumed twice, once across and once along the edges. Back doors, thresholds and the glass at nose height get wiped every time. Where there is a pool, wet feet come through the same door all summer and the tile inside it stays streaked until it is dried.
