Terrell has two kinds of house and they ask for different days. The old streets near downtown carry frame homes from a century ago: wood floors laid in narrow boards, tall baseboards, deep porches, and windows in wood sashes that still get raised. Out at the edge of town the newer subdivisions are brick on a slab, with tile through the middle and carpet in the bedrooms. So underfoot it is either boards with gaps between them or concrete under a thin layer.
In the old houses the grit is the problem: it sits in the gaps between boards and works like sandpaper on a finish, so it gets lifted before anything wet goes down. Floor registers, baseboards and window sashes are hand work. In the newer builds the same hour goes somewhere else, into tile grout and the carpet edge where it meets it.
